Therapy Dogs Bring Smiles to Our Residents

We recently welcomed a group of adorable therapy dogs into our home who brought joy, laughter, and plenty of cuddles to our residents. This special visit was not only a heartwarming experience for everyone involved but also made one resident’s birthday extra memorable. With wagging tails and gentle nuzzles, the dogs provided comfort and companionship, creating a truly wonderful atmosphere throughout the day.

Many of our residents have had pets in the past, and this interaction brought back fond memories of their own beloved animals and was an opportunity for them to share their favourite pet stories. For those who may not have had pets before, it was a new and delightful experience. The visit also had a positive impact on the therapy dogs, who clearly enjoyed all the attention, pats, and belly rubs they received!

The benefits of pet therapy are widely recognised particularly for older adults, including those living with dementia. Spending time with animals has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve overall emotional well-being. The calming presence of the dogs further encouraged our residents to engage, smile, and share stories about their past pets. There was a noticeable sense of relaxation and contentment throughout the home, with residents chatting happily and enjoying the gentle company of their four-legged visitors.

The event was a great success, with smiles all around. Watching our residents light up as they interacted with the dogs was truly heartwarming. Many commented on how much they had enjoyed the visit, and there were plenty of requests to have the dogs return soon—which we are delighted to say will be happening! The team behind our varied activities programme has already scheduled another visit, and we are looking forward to welcoming them back.

In addition to pet therapy, we have also recently introduced a sensory room within our home, providing a peaceful and calming space for residents who may need a quiet retreat. The sensory room features soft lighting, calming music and beautiful projector displays that create a soothing environment. This has already become a favourite spot for many of our residents, offering a gentle escape where they can unwind and relax.
